Cut the sugar! Don’t even buy bags of white sugar. No one needs that much sugar. That doesn’t mean you have to completely give up the treats. Have fun baking your own baked goods using alternative sweeteners like honey, agave nectar, and stevia. Your food will taste just as sweet and the glycemic index will be much lower. Instead of desserts and candy, eat fruit, you’ll get fiber from it and vitamins.

Cut the empty carbs! Don’t eat a carb unless it has fiber. Don’t buy bags of plain all purpose white flour. It is white because all the good stuff has been taken out of it. Try flours made from a variety of grains, or even soy and coconut flour (which gives a great flavor to baked goods) and mixing them with a whole wheat flour instead. Look for breads with four or more grams of fiber per slice, and add lots of vegetables.

Cut the bad fat! Saturated fats from cheese, whole milk, meats, cream, and butter are more likely to stick on you because you don’t get fiber with it. Get your fat from the healthy oils you saut your veggies in, or from nuts, that way you’re getting a good dose of fiber with it, instead of getting most of the calories from pure artery clogging fats. Healthy oils like olive can also be used in baking! Try light olive oil as opposed to extra virgin which will have less olive oil flavor, more like a canola or vegetable oil.

Remember that food is your fuel, not your friend, or entertainment when you’re bored. Anything you eat should have nutritional value and fiber.
